*These are not the official minutes of the meeting. The official minutes can be found here, and can be accessed by anyone with a tkc.edu email*
Wednesday's meeting began from a prayer from Reagan president, Patrick Thomas. The primary topics of the meeting were the TKC Athletics mascot discussion and the progress of the House Future Committee.
Reports
Tyler Hinsley gave a report for SAAC. He highlighted the success of the Kayaking event, and updated the Council of upcoming games for women's volleyball and men's soccer. Barton asked Hinsley if there was a way to get informed of games more than a week in advance, but the Dir. of Student Orgs informed Barton that all the games for all sports have been put in the comprehensive calendar. According to tenBoom (a TKC athlete herself), the primary issue about information dealing with time and place for these events is that a venue isn't reserved until a week before the game, so that information can only get shared within a week of the event.
The SBP then moved on to warn the Council about Hurricane Joaquin. He informed the Council that Student Development had a meeting to discuss plans if evacuation were to become necessary. (On Wednesday, the path of the storm was uncertain, but now, on Sunday, it is certain that the storm will not hit NYC)
TKC Athletics Discussion
Lewis moved to limit the discussion to ten minutes. Tyler Hinsley passed out documents explaining that a poll taken two years ago showed that 94% of student athletes agreed on changing the TKC Athletics mascot back to the Purple Knights (mascot of TKC when the school was located at Briarcliff Manor). Hinsley also highlighted athletic alumni who helped found organizations such as the National Christian Collegiate Association (NCCAA) and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). He also pointed out alum Eric Bergstol, former TKC basketball player, is the Owner and Founder of Empire Golf Management, LLC. and alum George Dempsey who played for the Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State Warriors).
The SBP pointed out that even if the mascot were changed back to the Purple Knights, there is no guarantee that a relationship would be formed with these notable alumni. He just wants to show that the "Purple Knights were a credible organization."
The SBP then asked if any of the House presidents had thoughts about forming a committee, along with the Athletics department, to form a plan to create the new Purple Knights. This plan would be then presented to the President's Cabinet for a vote. Reagan asked if the SBP and Tyler had asked members of the general student body to join the committee, but the SBP stated that he wanted to keep the discussion within the Council because he "didn't want to create tension between the administration and the student body" even though the discussion has already started happening amongst general members of the student body.
TenBoom expressed that she would not want to be on the committee because she wants to avoid tension by having a plan come directly down from Advancement or the President's Office. She stated that tension will arise especially with the "eight years worth of alumni who are Lions" and that the Council should be looking at the student body as a whole.
The SBP asked if any House president wanted to be on the committee, and after a few seconds of silence from all the House presidents, the SBP said that he would not form the committee this week.
House Future Committee Report
Reagan updated the Council on the HF Committee. He showed much enthusiasm to report that the new House fundraising proposal is now in effect. The new method includes a stipulation that Houses submit a list of their potential donors so that the school can check if there are any conflicts between school and House donations.
Reagan then moved that Dean of Students, David Leedy, be added to the House Future Committee. The motion was passed by unanimous consent.
Barton Blood Drive
The Barton Blood Drive will take place on October 28th, and the House who has the most participants will get served ice cream by the House of Barton.
Then, the Council discussed the Interregnum committee’s report from the previous meeting. The SBP asked that the Council talk about ways to improve Interregnum for next year. The Council brought up ways to improve the committee's choice of reading, and ways to improve feedback between the Council and committee.
The meeting was then adjourned.

09-16-15 Council Budget Dilemma, House Future, and Purple Knights?
Wednesday's meeting began with a prayer from SBA president, Chelsea Owens. The primary topics of the meeting were the Council Budget, the formation of a House Future Committee, and talks about the TKC mascot
Hannah Lezak, representative of SAAC, gave a report about upcoming athletic events, including Kayaking on the Hudson (September 26th beginning at 9am) and the Women's Volleyball Game at Pratt College (Sept. 24th at 7:30pm).
The SBP debriefed Fall Retreat, which had an official attendance of 430 people. He thanked all the House presidents for being actively involved in Fall Retreat.
The Director of Student Events gave her report about upcoming school-wide events. Next week, September 21st-25th, is International Week. Monday (Sept. 21st), there will be an International Food Fair in the City Room, where you can eat dishes from around the world for just $1. Tuesday (9/22) there will an International Talent Show in the City Room at 7:30pm. On Wednesday (9/23), you can wear whatever you want that's from a different country. On Thursday (9/24), there will be an international film will be screened in the Sloset at noon. On Friday (9/25), the International Students Club will lead a group to a foreign restaurant at 7pm.
The DoSE also announced that on Friday, September 25th, 400 free Chick-fil-A sandwiches will be given out during lunch. Homecoming week will start on September 28th with the start of TKC Assassins. Fall Picnic (Oct. 3rd) has a NEW location: Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The SBP opened up the discussion about what to do with the extra $654 left to allocate in the Council budget. He gave the Council two options. The first option involved giving the money to the Houses, giving each of the Houses just above $65. This would increase the allocation per head by just $1.31 which is not much considering that each House is allocated $54 per head in the House. The second option would be to give the money to the Student Organizations. The SBP pushed heavily to the presidents the former option to set a precedent that Houses are of highest importance to the Council. He argued that if the funds were given to the Houses, those higher up the King's ladder would see that Houses need the money and that funding ought to continue. The SBP also advised the House presidents to be cautious of their spending, and to make sure that they do not have a huge rollover at the end of the year, or else Advancement will allot less money to the House for the following year.
QE1 said that it was unfair of the Council to ask where the money should go without having more information about each House's budget and the budgets of the Student Organizations. Due to this lack of information that could be presented in the meeting, the budget discussion was tabled for next week.
The SBP then opened the discussion for a committee dealing with the future of the House system. He stated that it's important to set up a more formal way to deal with the future of the House system for the next five, ten, fifteen years. This topic follows the discussion from two weeks ago where the Council touched on House financial independence. To make sure that Advancement is okay with the Houses being financially independent, some House presidents argued that the Houses must have a concrete system to ensure that the Houses can sustain themselves. Reagan stated that "the point of the House Future committee wouldn't be to get all '1776' on the school" but rather to help the Houses find their way to a stable and sustainable future. Reagan then tried to form the official Committee, but the Director of Spiritual Life told him that he needed a list of actual members for the committee to be presented and voted on. Reagan then called out those presidents whom he had previously talked to about this committee (Thatcher, QE1, Lewis) and asked them to be a part of the Committee. Truth objected and stated that all House presidents should be on this Committee. The DoSL then clarified that more committee members could be added in the future.
Before voting on the members, Reagan and Thatcher reiterated that the committee would eventually consist of all House presidents, staff, and faculty members, to get a more credible and official plan for the future of the Houses. The House Future Committee, consisting of QE1, ten Boom, Thatcher, Lewis, and Reagan, was then voted on and unanimously approved.
The only new business of the meeting was a talk about the TKC mascot. The SBP brought up a poll done two years ago asking the athletes whether they would want to keep the Lion as their mascot or switch it to the mascot used by King's in its Briarcliff Manor days, the Purple Knights. The 2013 poll revealed only 4 of the 50+ athletes at the time would keep the Lions, and the rest would change the mascot. The SBP and the Director of Communications explained that alumni of TKC who attended when it was in Upstate NY feel that the school has abandoned them by changing their mascot, and they no longer feel associated with King's. The SBP urged the House presidents to think about changing the mascot for athletics back to the Purple Knights while keeping all other King's-related logos and gear as the Lions. The SBP tabled the discussion for next week when Tyler Hinsley would be present to show data supporting a move back to the Purple Knights.
The meeting was then adjourned.

09-02-2015 The State of House Budgets and Fall Retreat
Wednesday's Council meeting began with a prayer from Lewis president, Fisher Derderian. The primary themes of this meeting were the state of House budgets, fundraising, and updates about next week's Fall Retreat.
The SBP discussed the benevolence fund for Fall Retreat. He informed the presidents that the Council has only less than $100 in the fund, but he and the Cabinet had recently sent an email to faculty and staff to ask for donations. Expecting only a few hundred dollars from the faculty, he asked the House presidents to ask their alumni and upperclassmen for donations towards their respective Houses.
The SBP then announced his State of the College address, which will occur on October 29th at noon in the City Room.
The SBP then began a discussion about House budgets and House fundraising. He admitted that fundraising for Houses is much more difficult than it appears, stating that Houses can't fundraise too much money for broad purposes due to rules that the Office of Advancement has set on the fundraising system. He also presented the dilemma when it comes to alumni donations because there is no current system outside of King's jurisdiction which allows for these types of donations. If an alumni from a House wishes to donate to their House, it must coincide with a specific House fundraising effort for only that academic year. There's no fund where House exec teams can simply pull money from which alumni are allowed to donate to.
QE1 brought up the question as to how does King's want Houses that are financially self-sufficient while yet restraining the Houses with fundraising and donation regulations. Members of the Cabinet expressed that nobody in the King's institution is against House self-sufficiency, but some members of the King's administration are fearful of the idea of a self-sufficient House(s) who cannot be "controlled" by the administration. Ten Boom pointed out that before the Houses can even think about sufficiency, each of the Houses "need to define what the Houses are." She argued that if House members, even exec teams, can't agree on what the purpose of the Houses are, how will they expect anyone outside of the House to donate to an institution which has no clear meaning?
Truth asked the rest of the Council how will the relationship between the Houses and the school look like once the Houses reach their financial self-sufficiency. Reagan believes that the relationship will not be affected at all, stating that members of the Houses will still be involved with the school at large. The SBP agreed, saying that "without King's, there would be no Houses." Reagan concluded that King's students will always be involved and invest in the school and House communities because "students are [always] yearning for ownership of something."
After the House budget/fundraising discussion, the other Cabinet members gave their reports.
The Director of Student Events announced that the location for Fall Picnic is... TBA. She also expressed her excitement for the fact that the school has decided to put three weekends into one, referring to Fall Picnic, Homecoming, and Parent's Weekend all occurring on the same weekend (October 2nd-4th).
The Director of Spiritual Life talked about the success of the first Refuge (Aug. 27), which had an official attendance of 133 students (through the "Check I'm Here" system). He also informed the Council of his meetings with the Spiritual Life Committee.
The Director of Communications updated the Council on the number of people signed up for Fall Retreat (as of 6:30pm on Sept. 2nd). He stated that 120 of the freshmen/first-years had signed up, and a total of 225 students had signed up.
The Director of Student Orgs motioned to have the new student org budget approved, and after brief debate about certain bylaws affecting the creation of the budget, the budget was unanimously approved.
The meeting was then adjourned.

8-26-15 Fall Retreat Updates (3rd Council Meeting)
Wednesday's Council meeting, the first of the 2015-16 academic school year, began with a prayer from Spencer Kashmanian, the first ever Director of Spiritual Life. The primary focus of the meeting was to update the House presidents on the preparations for the TKC Fall Retreat (September 10th-12th).
Tim Stratton (Dir. of Finance) went over the prices for upperclassmen in each House. He pointed out that the House of Churchill fundraised enough money that their upperclassmen will only have to pay $18 for a ticket, which is $42 dollars less than the baseline price. Prices for upperclassmen in other Houses goes as follows:
ten Boom: $30
Barton: $50
Truth, Thatcher: $51
SBA: $53
QE1: $56
Reagan, Bonhoeffer, Lewis: $60
Tim and Reese Evans (SBP) advised the presidents to remind the freshmen/first-years to sign up for Fall Retreat, being that their tickets have already been paid for through their tuition.
Tim also presented the new Council budget, which cut Council funding to the annual Red & Green Affair hosted by Lewis and Thatcher, and the annual Super Bowl party hosted by Bonhoeffer. Tim pointed out that if these Houses were in need of extra funding besides House funds for these events, money could be pulled from other areas of the Council's budget.
Annalise Bourgeois (Dir. of Student Orgs) talked about the success of the Student Org leadership training day, which she hopes will strengthen the bond between the Orgs and the Council. She also stated that she order two extra buses for Fall Retreat making it a total of twelve (12) buses that will be used to transport King's students to Iriquois Springs.
After a quick discussion about a meeting time for the presidents, the meeting was adjourned

5-07-15 Fall Retreat & Dress Code (2nd Council Meeting)
Thursday's Council meeting, the last one before the summer break, focused on two main topics: Fall Retreat and the Dress Code.
The most prominent point of discussion was the price of Fall Retreat.
Here are the prices for the 2015 Fall Retreat (September 10th-12th) as approved by the Cabinet and Student Development:
$30 for freshmen
$60 for upperclassmen
For the freshmen, the $30 will be included in their tuition, so they'll be indirectly paying for their retreat. For the upperclassmen, they will have to come up with the $60 on their own. This comes as a surprising decision especially since Houses struggle to encourage their upperclassmen to attend. Although people share their awesome experiences about Fall Retreat, upperclassmen especially are reluctant to attend when the retreat itself doesn't change. The SBP stated that since his goal is to allow Houses to become financially self-sufficient, he doesn't want Houses to have to fundraise for Fall Retreat. This is in response to how the previous SBP, Maxine Fileta, handled the retreat fundraising by dividing the $50,000 goal amongst the ten Houses so that each House had to raise $5000. Reese wants Houses to focus their fundraising efforts solely on their own retreats, so he and the Cabinet agreed to raise the cost of tickets rather than ask Houses to fundraise. Members of the Cabinet express their dedication to House-flourishing as their main goal in their decision. The House presidents had no vote on the decision that Megan Phelps delivered.
The next point of discussion involved the Dress Code.
The House of Barton set up 15 minutes of open discussion about the King's "business casual" dress code. Members of the Cabinet jokingly brought up points from previous meetings about what "jeggings" are and whether or not they are appropriate. The Director of Student Organizations stated that Student Life was considering bringing in a fashion consultant to give a presentation on what "business casual" means.
Then, ten Boom asked that instead of trying to determine whether certain articles of clothing were allowed or prohibited, the Council should try to figure out the "spirit" of the dress code. The SBP pointed out that one big problem with the dress code is its "ambiguity." Barton stated that the dress code exists because it is "respectful" to the faculty and an "equalizing" factor for students to put everyone on the same agenda. QE1 brought up the fact that the problem is an institutional one because the dress code is "not really enforced". The SBP brought up conversations he's had with faculty and staff, and he said, "students believe it's the professor's responsibility to mark students absent for violating the dress code, but faculty think it's the students who should call each other out for violating the dress code." ten Boom then asked whether dress code confrontations are to be handled the same way as Honor Code violations. Reagan argued that dress code enforcement should stay within the Houses, and that House leaders should set the example when it comes to the dress code.
After this talk, the Director of Student Events initiated the formation of a dress code committee to write out a clear definition to present to Student Development. The committee will consist of the Dir. of Student Events, and the presidents of Lewis, Reagan, and ten Boom.
After this approval, the meeting then ended.

First Council Meeting under SBP Reese - 4/22/15
Each year, the Annual Meeting serves as the official Council meeting where the old Council leaves and the new Council steps in. This year, the new Student Body President, Reese Evans, formally motioned to appoint his new Cabinet, which included the new position, the Director of Spiritual Life.
Here's the new Cabinet:
SBP: Reese Evans
Here's the new Cabinet:
SBP: Reese Evans
Director of Student Events: Mary Losiak
Dir. of Student Organizations: Annalise Bourgeois
Dir. of Finance: Tim Stratton
Dir. of Communications: Taylor Thompson
Dir. of Spiritual Life: Spencer Kashmanian
Dir. of Student Organizations: Annalise Bourgeois
Dir. of Finance: Tim Stratton
Dir. of Communications: Taylor Thompson
Dir. of Spiritual Life: Spencer Kashmanian
After the formal election of the Cabinet, each of the old House presidents and Cabinet members prayed over their successors. Many of them prayed that their successors gain "wisdom and clarity" for their new roles. Former-Barton president, Cooper Crouch, prayed that the new Barton president, Audrey Walczak, maintain the "sass that Bartons have" as she leads her House. After these prayers finished, members of the old and new Council prayed over Kashmanian and his new role as the first ever Dir. of Spiritual Life. Then, Maxine Fileta prayed over Reese Evans. After that, all members of the new Council were sworn in by the Council Oath, and the old Council departed to let the new Council begin their meeting.
Evans began the meeting by giving his Inaugural Address, where he stated his two major goals for next year: get Houses more in tune with their alumni, and set the Houses on track to become financially self-sufficient. He pointed that the specifics for those goals will be organized in the summer. Evans also initiated the motion to vote on the two House presidents who would comprise the Budget Committee. Four Houses (Lewis, Barton, tenBoom, Truth) volunteered, and initially Lewis moved to have himself and tenBoom as the two presidents. Churchill amended the motion to have Lewis and Barton as the two, and eventually the motion passed. The 4-person Budget Committee now consists of the SBP, the Dir. of Finance, and the presidents of Barton & Lewis.
Spencer Kashmanian gave his first report as Dir. of Spiritual Life, where he explained his vision for the role. He hopes that the role will serve as a working liaison between the Council and the Spiritual Life Committee. He hopes to help Houses create and train associates concerned with the planning and structure of respective House Bible Studies, and he would like to see the organizing of more Theological Roundtables at King's. Evans stated that the Dir. of Spiritual Life reminds the Council that "(they) are here to serve."
The meeting then adjourned. The next Council meeting will occur on Thursday, May 7th at 12pm in the Founder's Room.
Notice: For the purpose of this blog, I will refer to House presidents and Cabinet members (excluding the SBP) by their House or position name. Above I listed the Cabinet members, so here I list the House presidents:

Bonhoeffer: Jacob Wilson
Churchill: Scott Bryan
Elizabeth: Leah Contreras
Lewis: Fisher Derdarian
Reagan: Patrick Thomas

Introduction
Hello fellow TKC students,
My name is Fermin Villalpando and I am here to report on the actions and sayings of the 2015-16 TKC Council.
Tonight, at 5:30pm in the Founder's Room, is the Annual Meeting where the current Council (headed by SBP Maxine Fileta) steps down and inaugurates the newly elected Council (led by SBP-elect Reese Evans). Tonight begins a new year of debate and decision-making by the highest form of student government here at The King's College.
I am here to make sure that you as a student hear not just who is voting Yay and Nay on certain key issues, but what each of the House presidents and Cabinet members have to say concerning the issues. Whether you voted your House president in or voted for his/her opponent, you have the right to know how he or she is representing your House to rest of the Council.
My main objective is not to criticize those on the Council, but rather it is to ensure that students know how their student government is working for them. What I hope this blog will do is encourage people to become more actively involved with their Houses and with the school to ensure that they have an active voice on campus. Ideally, I'd like to see higher attendance from students at the Council meetings (which is every student's right as stated in Article 7, Section 3 of the Council Constitution), but that change will come slowly but surely.
I hope that you can see why caring for your student government matters as much as I think it matters.
Thank you, and I hope to see some of you at tonight's meeting.
